Recruitment Tips & Resources for Recovery Corps Sites

Tip #1: Language is important: Recovery Corps members are not “volunteers,” they are AmeriCorps members. This is not their “job,” but their service position. They don’t “work,” they serve.

Tip #2: Reach out to former participants and current volunteers: Did you know that many former program participants and volunteers can make great Recovery Corps members? Peer support is a very effective service delivery method. Who better to “get it” then someone with similar experiences?

Tip #3: Post your open positions on your website: This is one of the best ways your organization will find applicants. Our standard online posting is available in the recruitment toolkit.

Tip #4: Connect with your organization’s Public Relations or Communications department: You have a great story to tell. As a returning site, you have seen the benefits for your participants through Recovery Corps. As a new site, you can announce that you’ve been awarded a member. Sample newsletter language is available in the recruitment toolkit to help you place a story in your local paper.

Tip #5: Contact community groups and colleagues: Grassroots outreach to placement groups, veterans groups, cultural centers, places of worship and other groups helps build a strong pool of applicants. Recovery Corps members are from all walks of life. Connect with colleagues to let them know about the available positions. Don’t forget to enlist the help of your current members to send emails and make presentations.
